Despite its diminutive size and small population, Warroad is no stranger to the biggest worldwide stages of hockey. The city is home to four Olympic Gold Medalists, including Bill and Roger Christian, who each won Gold as part of Team USA at the 1960 Olympics, Bill’s son, Dave, who won Gold with the legendary “Miracle on Ice” team in 1980, and most recently, when Gigi Marvin took home Gold in 2018.
Beyond winning Gold, Warroad natives have been fixtures on the medal stand in the past. Dan McKinnon and Ginny Christian each won Silver Medals at the 1956 Games, while Henry Boucha brought home Silver in 1972. Gigi Marvin twice won Silver Medals at the Olympics in 2010 and 2014. The most recent men’s player to represent Warroad in the Olympics was T.J. Oshie at the 2014 Games in Sochi. Who could forget the impact T.J. left on the big stage with his thrilling overtime shootout win over Russia.
This proud history provides a blueprint for kids in town that proves anything is possible, with hard work and a willingness to succeed.
